This shore tour is an excellent chance for you to learn about Belize, a country composed of many cultures and languages that reflect its rich history.
Your first destination will be the ancient Mayan city of Altun Ha, a name meaning ‘Stone Water’. The site is known to have been occupied by 200 BC, but the bulk of its construction seems to have been undertaken during the Classic Period of Maya civilization (250 - 900 AD). The site covers an area of about five square miles, with the central square mile being home to the remains of some 500 structures.
The largest of Altun Ha’s temples is the Temple of the Masonry Altars. Standing at 54 feet, this temple pyramid really is an impressive sight, and not to be missed. The site was also home to Belize’s most valuable find, the large, jade-carved head of the Sun-God, Kinich Ahau.
You’ll then return to Belize City, where you’ll see some more historical sites including the redbrick St John’s Cathedral - where the coronations of Mosquito Coast’s kings took place - and the British Colonial Mansion. You’ll then conclude your tour with a visit to the Belize Tourism Village.
